KHSS Land Acknowledgement
& what Land Acknowledgements are
The KHSS head office is located on Treaty 6 territory. Our Not-for-Profit corporation is established on the historical land of the Cree, Assiniboine and Ojibwe nations. This is also the homeland for the peoples of the Métis Nation of Alberta Region 4. We honour these traditional roots of our city, thank and continue to learn more about these peoples, both past and present.

Treaties 6 was established in the time between August 18, 1871 and September 9, 1876. The Indigenous bands that signed the Treaty on August 23, 1876 were agreed to by the Cree, Assiniboine and Ojibwe leaders with the Canadian Government.
Land Acknowledgements in Canada are said at the beginning
They are a way to recognize the culture and value that the traditional First Nations people, Metis and Inuit territories bring to Canadian society as a whole.
The overarching goal of Land Acknowledgements are to "commemorate the Indigenous peoples' principle of kinship to the land" (Powwow Times).
Land Acknowledgements were begun by The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and are a way of honouring the first people to inhabit the land of Canada.
