Qigong: Qigong: Ji Hong Tai Chi & Wushu College “The “Ji Hong Tai Chi System” is a contemporary, versatile and scientific training method for teaching a traditional health/exercise and martial art system. Students who practice Tai Chi using our method benefit from better health, balance, core strength and mind/body harmony, which not only helps them deal with stress but also provides the foundation for high performance in day-to-day activities“, (About Ji Hong | Ji Hong Wushu & Tai Chi College). Qigong can be practiced with very little body movement. Therefore, it is ideal for those who are wheelchair bound, who can stand easily, or who would prefer to have a chair available. Other benefits of Qigong: •Positive effects from balance training •Helps to reduce falls. “When compared to more traditional interventions, qigong was found to have similar and sometimes better effects”, (Qigong: NCIH) Qigong benefits for seniors and older adults Despite that the number of qigong studies including older adults is limited. Two 2019 reviews in 2019 looked at the effects of qigong on seniors. “The first review considered 13 studies with a total of 1,340 community-dwelling older adults with chronic disease and found that qigong had a significant positive effect on quality of life but not on depressive symptoms.” The “second review found that qigong helped improve physical ability and may have positive effects on depression, balance, and functioning (the ability to do normal, everyday activities).” Qigong v.s Tai Chi Tai Chi is thought of as a way to promote health and rehabilitation and is a far more well-known practice than qigong, although it is actually a form of qigong. It “is one of the hundreds of forms of qigong exercises that was developed in China.” The class that the instructor we will have at the office on July 31st, is called Ba Duan Jin (or Eight Section Brocade). It is thought that Chinese mind-body exercises (such as qigong and tai chi) improved problem solving, attention, working memory, and inhibition, (Qigong: What You Need To Know | NCCIH).
